Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much.
- 1 Corinthians 8:2 (NLT).
Life has a funny way of humbling a person. One minute you're up and the next you're flat on your back. If I've learned anything, I've learned that disaster can strike anyone at any time. No one is exempt. Whether it's self-inflicted, poor choices, or you're a victim of circumstance, the problems we face in this life are no respecter of persons. How you respond to them will be the difference in whether you survive it or end up destroyed by it.
Some of us have made it to the other side of addiction, financial problems, toxic relationships, broken marriages, etc. Others have been stuck in a vicious cycle of recovery then relapse, another recovery then another setback. No matter how many times you get rescued you find yourself right back in the middle of a mess again and again. You say things like "I know what I need to do," or "I've got a plan," but the truth is, you don't know how you're going to fix it or keep yourself from ending up right back at rock bottom again.
I used to know everything. No one could tell me anything because I thought I was the smartest person in every room. I had life figured out, but for some reason I was always in legal trouble, strung out on drugs, and not taking care of my responsibilities. Every time I hit rock bottom, I knew exactly what I needed to do to get back on top. The problem was every time I tried to fix things on my own, I found myself back where I started or worse off than I had ever been. I would do good for a little while and then I was right back to doing the things I swore I would never do again.
After my overdose in 2022, I found myself questioning everything I thought I knew. For the first time in my life, I wasn't sure if I could fix myself. In fact, the only thing I knew was that everything I had tried for 44 years had failed. If I wanted any chance to succeed, I had to stop pretending that I had all the answers and stop lying to myself. It was time to get real with myself, my loved ones, and most importantly, God.
The guy on the left thought he had all of the answers; The guy on the right wakes up everyday knowing that apart from Jesus he can do absolutely nothing. If you get real with God, He will get real with you. The price to get to this place in your life is steep, though. You have to be so sick and tired of being sick and tired that you forget everything you thought you knew; Pride stripped away; Ego dead and buried; Face down on the floor. That's the entry fee to getting real. It's a price most people won't pay, but it's what will get you in the door to a better future. Are you willing to pay the price? Are you willing to become a blank slate? God Bless!
