Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. - 1 Corinthians 1:21 (NLT).

We all have our favorite preachers. Maybe it was your grandma's preacher when you were a kid. Maybe it was an evangelist who came to preach at your church one Sunday. To some people, preaching is the only thing standing between them and lunch. For others, preaching is boring compared to the singing that goes on during praise and worship. But Paul didn't say that God uses our foolish singing to save; the saving comes through the preaching. Whatever we come to the church expecting is usually what we get. If we aren't expecting much, then we'll walk away with nothing. If you come in expecting to be fed, then you'll leave full.

I had no interest in becoming a preacher. Public speaking wasn’t something that came naturally to me. Plus, I had always associated preaching with being poor, at least that's how I viewed it. Then the Lord showed me that being broke is nothing compared to being broken. I was willing to do whatever He asked if He would rebuild my life. It was in my rebuilding that Jesus began showing me just how important preaching is. It was like preachers were speaking directly to me. Everywhere I went, the sermons were speaking to what I was feeling or what I was going through at the time.

I began seeing the supernatural way that the Word of God connects broken people to Jesus through the preaching of "foolish" men and women just like you and me. If you are willing to submit yourself to hearing the Word of God being preached, then Jesus is faithful to speak directly to you through the preacher. We are saved through faith (Eph 2:8) and without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb 11:6). Faith comes from hearing the Word of God (Rom 10:17), but how will anyone hear without a preacher (Rom 10:14). Now, preaching is my purpose and I’m grateful that I get to contribute to the Kingdom in this way.

But apart from Jesus I can do nothing (Jn 15:5). A basketball in my hands isn't anything worth bragging about, but a basketball in the hands of Michael Jordan transformed the game. I view preaching in a similar way. A sermon is just words, until you put it into the hands of Jesus. Suddenly, those words have the power to transform lives and minister to anything we may be going through. Jesus isn’t just in the words; He is the Word (Jn 1:1). Preaching may seem foolish to some, but to those of us who know Jesus, it’s the vehicle that brings us closer to Him. God Bless!
