John’s two disciples found Jesus and said to him, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?’” - Luke 7:20 (NLT).

There comes a point in every Christian's walk where we begin to question everything we believe. Whether it's due to the world throwing the kitchen sink at us or because someone we trusted let us down, we all have seasons of fear, doubt, and questions. But before you allow that seed to take root, let's look at a perfect example of how God views us in the midst of these seasons.

In Luke 7, we see the story of John the Baptist sending two of his disciples to ask Jesus if He's really the Messiah or not. Just a short time earlier, it was John the Baptist who had announced to the world who Jesus was, The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! - John 1:29 (NLT). What would make John question what he believed? What changed? The answer: his circumstances. When circumstances change, we all tend to second guess everything we thought we knew.

John had been the most famous preacher in the land, that is, until Jesus came along. John had famously said, "He must increase, but I must decrease." - John 3:30 (KJV). John knew his role, but soon after John was thrown in prison, he began questioning if he had really heard from the Lord. When the crowds were gone and he was alone in a cell, he began doubting everything he had believed. Silence is deafening; Loneliness leads to fear; Fear leads to doubt.

Jesus didn't criticize John or run him down to his disciples. Jesus simply told John's disciples to remember what Jesus had already done: blind eyes opened, the lame walking, and the Gospel being preached. Then Jesus said this, "Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet. John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you. I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!” Even though John began questioning who Jesus was, Jesus never questioned who John was, and more importantly, who He had called John to be.

Sometimes the Lord has more faith in you than you have in Him. He called you out of the darkness to tell others about His marvelous light; You were chosen; You were handpicked. Maybe you were chosen because He knows you have something inside of you that others don't. Circumstances may change, but the purpose you were created for does not. The next time you begin having doubts and fears, remember all of the times God has already shown up in your life and that you have a Savior who believes in you. God Bless!
