22 A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods. 23 They were severely beaten, and then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape. 24 So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks. - Acts 16:22-24 (NLT).
Have you ever felt like the whole world was ganging up on you? We all have good days and bad days, but sometimes the bad days feel like everyone is out to knock you off your walk with God. In our verses of the week, Paul and Silas were attacked, stripped of their clothes, beaten, and thrown in jail. You could say the world was out to get them, but how they responded made all the difference in the situation.
Not everyone has actually been in a real jail cell, but we've all been prisoners to our thoughts and feelings. When the world comes at us, we tend to retreat into silent mode. We become prisoners in our own heads; Afraid to talk about how we're feeling and trapped by our every thought. For most of us, the mental prisons we put ourselves in are far worse than any physical prison. We convince ourselves that we have to fight the battle alone, and sometimes, that there's no way out.
The world has a funny way of robbing us of our peace, beating us up physically, mentally, and emotionally, then leaving us to comb through the wreckage. But there is a silver lining offered to those who hand their lives over to the care of Jesus: a peace that passes all understanding in the face of whatever the world throws at you. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:7 (KJV). The peace that Jesus gives acts as a guard to your heart and mind.
Regardless of what is happening on the outside, Jesus wants to do a work on the inside of you that will render the outside world powerless. You don't always get to choose what happens around you or to you, but God has given you the power to choose what happens within you. That "freedom" to choose is something that people who don't know Jesus doesn't get to experience. We have a choice: become a product of our environment or make our environment a product of us. Whether you're in a jail cell or a hospital bed, nothing can stop the unspeakable joy that Jesus has put in your heart!
Paul and Silas chose to make their environment a product of them. 25 Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. 26 Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off! - Acts 16:25-26 (NLT). How they responded to the situation had a direct effect on everyone around them. We have the same opportunity when people see how we respond to the circumstances we're facing. Instead of becoming a prisoner to the world, shake off the chains and let the peace of Jesus guard your heart and mind. God Bless!
