5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. – Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV).
Not long ago, Shevon and I were driving home from Shreveport, LA. While passing through Little Rock, AR, our GPS told us we were being rerouted because of strong storms along our current route. The new route was going to take an additional 2.5 hours of driving. With clear skies above, we had to make a choice: trust our eyes and continue down our current path or acknowledge the GPS and take the alternate route.
Don’t you wish life came with a GPS? A voice that speaks to us when life’s storms are ahead. A device that reroutes us when the road is treacherous, even when we don’t see any clear danger. Wouldn’t that be amazing? We may not have a dash-mounted GPS for all of life’s highways, but we do have the GHS: God’s Holy Spirit.
In order for us to be guided by the Holy Spirit, we have to first trust that He’s not going to steer us in the wrong direction. Then, we have to let go of our own need to be in control. The most important part of trust is letting go. Sometimes we tend to hang on to our own understanding because we can’t see the danger ahead. We make decisions based on what we see at one particular moment in time, but God sees time as a whole. He knows how the story ends. He’s the Author and Finisher of our lives. Trust Him, then obey Him. Trusting Him won't always make sense in the moment, but it will always make sense in the end.
We ended up stopping for the night in Little Rock. As it turned out, 70 MPH straight line winds and multiple tornadoes hit North Central Arkansas that night. We had the benefit of seeing what our GPS had prevented us from. We won’t always get to see the outcome of what the Holy Spirit is saving us from, but when we trust and obey the Lord, He will surely and safely direct our paths. God Bless!!
