for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. - Philippians 2:13 (NIV).
We were all created for a purpose. God gave each and every one of us certain talents and skills to fulfill His will for our lives. Some of us use those talents and skills to fulfill God's purpose, while some of us don't. Some of us walk in our calling, while some of us run from it. Some of us knew what our purpose was at an early age, while others had to be recreated because the world hijacked us at an early age. Either way, we were ALL created for a purpose.
One of the greatest sins I've ever committed was quitting on my calling. Nothing from my past or any mistake I ever made brought me more regret, more anguish, more shame, more resentment, or more guilt than walking away from the purpose that I had been called to. I lived 30 years of my life being the second half of the above statements. I was the runner. The one who squandered the talents the Lord had given me. Every step I took away from God, led me down roads that trapped me from being who God called me to be: addicted; alcoholic; abusive; rebellious; and just plain lost. I wasn't living life, I was just existing. I was another example of what could've been; what would've been; what should've been.
How could God use someone with so many problems, so many fears, and so many unresolved issues? Why would God want me after I ran from Him for so long? Where was God at when I was doing so bad, strung out, and homeless? Truth is God specializes in redeeming lost causes. Enter: Jacob. Jacob was a problem child. He lied, cheated, and stole. Then he ran. One night God visited Jacob in his sleep and revealed to him that he was going to make a mighty nation out of him. Genesis 28:16, Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I wasn’t even aware of it!” (NLT). Jacob's eyes were opened to God's plan for his life. God didn't create Jacob to exist; He created him for a purpose.
All of the people pictured above will tell you the same thing: It took a lot of God working in them for Him to begin working through them. God is ready to do a work in you, but He needs you to wake up to what He has planned for your life. The world lulled you to sleep, but God is ready for your eyes to finally be opened. He's still writing your story. He can use your past failures and mistakes and turn them into a testimony that will help others. Like our key verse says, it's God who is working in us, but we have to let Him do the work. Stop running from your purpose and start walking in it! God Bless!
