"Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 18:4 (KJV).
Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers today! I've been blessed with two loving Grandmas, one amazing Mom, a pretty awesome Mother-In-Law, and a naturally beautiful, God-fearing wife. My life has been dramatically improved because of the influence these women have had on my life. I thank God every day for them.
As I was praying this morning, an experience Shevon and I shared kept coming to my mind. Two months ago, as I was driving home from work, I felt the Holy Spirit pressing me to go pray for a husband and wife we know. The wife's mother was living with them and was bedfast in their living room, and the husband was about to have surgery that week. An already stressful environment was about to get even more stressful.
So, I pulled into my driveway and left the truck running while I ran in and asked Shevon if she wanted to join me to go pray for this family. Of course, she said yes, and off we went. We called the family to make sure they were home and let them know we were coming on short notice. This type of Kingdom Work was new to Shevon and me, so we weren't quite sure what to expect showing up at someone's house on short notice and asking if we could come in and pray for a family member of theirs. The Holy Spirit was driving this encounter, so we just trusted in the Lord.
The wife welcomed us in and took us to her mother's bed. As I anointed the mother with oil and we joined hands to pray, a seven-year-old girl walked into the room and joined us. I had never seen her before, so I assumed she was a grandchild of the husband and wife. We finished praying and I asked where the husband was so we could pray for his upcoming surgery. The wife sent us to the husband's office behind the house.
As we finished praying for the husband, the wife and little girl came walking out to the husband's office. The little girl had asked the wife if we were from a church and the wife had told the little girl, yes, so the girl asked if she could speak to us.
My heart began to break as the little girl asked us to pray for her mommy. You see, this little girl, along with her older brother and sister, had been taken from their mother because their mother was addicted to heroin. They had been living in unspeakable conditions and the State of Missouri had taken them and placed them in the care of the husband and wife we were there to pray for.
As this little girl was asking us to pray for her mother, I suddenly realized that God had sent us to her. Yes, the elderly mother needed prayer. Yes, the husband needed prayer, too. But God knew there was a child hurting at that house and she needed to know that God would send out an army to find her and her siblings. She didn't understand why her mommy wasn't around anymore, but she knew she could call on the Name of Jesus and He would make a difference. The faith of a child.
As we celebrate this Mother's Day, please remember the prodigal mothers and fathers that are still lost in the world today and please pray for the children of these mothers and fathers. We are all called to be the light in a dark world, and to tell as many people as we can about the life-changing power that Jesus Christ offers. You never know who it is that is depending on you to be the witness God called you to be. Happy Mother's Day and God bless!!
PS - As of last week, the little girl's mother was staying with family in Illinois and attempting to get clean. Please keep this family in your prayers.
