"How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone." - James 4:14 (NLT).
If tomorrow never comes, will you be ready? That's the question I want you to think about today. We live in a world where most people measure success by how big their house is or by what kind of car they drive, but I've never heard a dying person utter the words, I wish I had lived in a bigger house, with their last breath. Regrets over wasted time spent chasing things that didn't matter are more in line with the thoughts and words of a dying person. And that's if they're lucky enough to know they're dying before they die.
Addiction can take away our chance to make amends and it robs us of our precious time with the people and moments that matter the most. I hear a different narrative coming from people in recovery. Many of us recovering from addiction have lost everything at some point. Not just the material things, but the relationships with our kids and our time spent with them. Family members and friends have even died while in our addiction, and now we're left with the regret that those loved ones will never get to see the new person we've become. One thing addiction has taught us is that tomorrow isn't guaranteed.
Losing everything has a way of simplifying the way we view the things that matter. Instead of material possessions, spending quality time with our loved ones is so much more important. Instead of the size of our house, we're happy having a safe place to stay. Instead of having the fanciest car, we're satisfied having a dependable ride to work. For that matter, some of us have found happiness in just being able to work and having a job! Regardless of where our loyalties were in the past, we only have today to make what matters most the thing that matters the most.
A relationship with Jesus is the most important thing any of us can chase after today. Without Jesus in our lives, everything will fall apart, and our priorities will get shuffled. With Jesus in our lives, everything will fall into place. Chains will be broken, families will be restored, and lives will be changed. Material things will come and go, so today let's focus on what really matters the most: our relationship with Jesus and our relationships with our loved ones. If tomorrow never comes, will you be ready? Make today count. God Bless!
