I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. - 2 Timothy 1:5 (NLT).
Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, moms, and mamas out there! You deserve all the praise, honor, and love we can give you for all of the hard work you've put in that no one will ever truly know or understand. For the late nights when we were sick, the sacrifices that go unnoticed, and for accepting all of the collect calls from the county jail when no one else would take the call. You deserve so much more than just one day a year!
When I read 2 Timothy 1:5, I can't help but think of my own mom, Patricia, and my grandma, Eldora. From as early as I can remember they were Sunday school teachers. My grandma passed in 2001, but my mom is still teaching Sunday school at her church. I grew up on stories about Noah and The Flood, the walls of Jericho falling, and of course, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. My grandma would have me memorize Bible verses like the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and Psalm 23. She would reward me with gifts when I successfully quoted scripture to her. Sometimes it was a pack of baseball cards and other times it was cold, hard cash. I didn't understand it then, but I can see now how they were both trying to plant seeds of faith in me at a young age.
As the years went by, I drifted from the church and from the faith that filled my grandma first, and then my mom. I can't count the number of times I was in my addiction or in a bar, and the Holy Spirit would begin convicting me right in the middle of my mess. Teaching Sunday school wasn't the only thing my mom continued doing after I was gone and lost in the world...she kept praying for me. Praying for my safety and praying that I would come to my senses before it was too late. Those prayers were heard. When God starts answering the prayer of a mother, the drugs and alcohol can't stop Him, prison walls can't stop Him, and the gates of hell will not prevail.
I'm here today because someone who loved me beyond words continued praying for me. I'm here today because my mom and grandma planted seeds of faith in me at a young age, and because of that, I knew where to turn when my life was upside down. To all the mothers, moms, and mamas out there: keep planting seeds, never stop praying, and leave a legacy of faith. Happy Mother's Day and God Bless!
