But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. – Romans 8:11 (KJV).
The promise of an eternity with Jesus is enough. The promise that when this mortal life is finished, we can lay down all of the sickness and pain would be enough for any of us to put up with our old bodies for a few years on earth. If that was all Jesus had to offer, then being His disciple would still most certainly be worth it. We don’t deserve eternal life with Him. We don’t deserve to be called His children. But this verse is more than a promise of eternal life. This verse is a reminder that we have been given a gift so powerful that we can have an abundant, fruit-filled life before eternity even begins.
Throughout Romans 8, Paul is trying to tell us that we don’t have to live bound, bruised, and broken lives here on earth. Paul said the same Spirit who raised up Christ from the dead is ready and willing to breathe life back into our mortal bodies. We aren’t taking our mortal bodies with us to eternity, because we have a promise of a new, celestial body when we get to heaven (1 Cor. 15:44). No, Paul was delivering a message of hope to a dying world that desperately needs help in the here and now. A message that we can have life, and have it more abundantly, despite being in a world that is dying all around us. An abundant life is what Jesus promised us, and through His Spirit we can have just that.
Broken homes, addiction, depression, and anxiety are all products of the world we live in. Look no further than the people walking down the street in your neighborhood or the people in the supermarkets and you will come to one conclusion: None of them are happy. Let’s face it, life without Jesus is just getting by, but life with Jesus is so much more than that. It’s a life filled with miracles, signs, and wonders. It’s a life filled with faith, hope, love, power, and purpose. It's a life filled with restored families and child-like excitement about what the future holds.
As we draw closer to the holidays this year, let's give thanks for the Spirit that leads us, challenges us, protects us, and resurrects us from our graves of sin. If you haven't experienced Jesus' resurrecting power, then there's no time like the present to run to the One who can breathe life back into any dead situation! Help isn't on the way; help is already here! God Bless!
