11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. 14 I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.” - Jeremiah 29:11-14 (NLT).
I didn't know what I was going to do. I had nowhere to turn and no one to turn to. At the age of 44, I found myself in prison for the 5th time and all the bridges I had ever crossed were now burning in the background of my life. I was tired of letting myself and everyone I cared about down and not living up to even the humblest of expectations. I had no hope for my future. Apart from my kids being born, my life had been a disaster to that point. My addiction had held me in captivity for 29 years of my life and I had no reason to believe the future would be any different.
I'll never forget the first time I heard Jeremiah 29:11-14. I was at a recovery meeting in prison and another inmate stood up and read it to the group. I didn't hear the book and chapter of the scripture, so I approached him after the meeting and asked him what he had read. I went back to my cell and read the passage a dozen times. It felt like God was speaking directly to me. I can't explain it, but I suddenly had this confidence that my captivity was over and that the God of restoration was going to restore me. I didn't know how, when, or where but I knew everything was going to be alright. I didn't have a plan for my life, but I had finally found Someone who did: the Creator of the universe.
There is nothing scarier in life than not having plans for your future or any hope that your past won't keep repeating itself. It's a dark place to be when you can't see past your problems. The things that got us to that place of brokenness was putting our faith and trust in ourselves and turning to things that led us to being bound, bruised, and broken. We put our faith and trust in the wrong people, places, and things. When you turn to the Creator of the universe to create a new life for you and trust him with your future, He promises that you can have hope in all of your tomorrows. He created the universe out of nothing by simply speaking it into existence, so imagine what He can do when you hand Him over all of you. He creates miracles out of mistakes and His love brings the dead back to life. He will be faithful with your future. God Bless!
