But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. - 2 Corinthians 11:3 (NKJV).
The devil is a liar. He uses fear, shame, guilt, and discouragement to separate God's sheep from the protection found in a life spent with Jesus Christ. The wolf knows sheep are most vulnerable when they're alone and separated from the herd. He starts by whispering lies in our ears that begin to take over our thoughts. He repeats them until we begin to listen to them, dwell on them, and entertain them. After a while, we start believing them.
Checkered past? No one will hire you! Broken marriage? Divorce is the answer! Lost your kids? They're better off without you! Addiction? Depression? Suicidal thoughts? You give the devil an inch and he will take a mile with the venom he tries to impregnate in the minds of the vulnerable. Yes, the devil is a liar and he's good at it! He takes the truth we know and twists it into his distorted truth.
Jesus was straight forward about the devil: "...He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies." - John 8:44b (NLT), while the Apostle Peter warns us to always be on guard for an attack, "Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour." - 1 Peter 5:8 (NLT). The devil's mission is clear: to take away the abundant life promised to God's children by any means necessary.
Now, here's what the devil doesn't want you to know: his power is limited, very limited. In fact, he operates by turning our faith into the fear of what might happen. He takes our trust in a perfect God who never fails and tempts us to start relying on our own, imperfect power. In other words, he is only effective when we allow him the opportunity to be effective. When we stop allowing his influence in our lives, we render him powerless and ineffective.
So, what do we do when the enemy tries to indoctrinate us with lies? For one, we filter out lies with the Truth found in the Bible (John 8:32). The more we read the Word the more we become grounded in truth. Second, we receive discernment from the Holy Spirit as a spiritual gift (1 Cor. 12:10). The Holy Spirit will help us separate the truth from lies. And lastly, by speaking the Name of Jesus (Luke 10:17). When we speak the Name of Jesus out loud, something supernatural takes place. The demons flee at the mention of His Name!
You never have to fight the battles you face alone. Jesus tells us in Matthew 28:20, "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen." (KJV). When the devil tries to deceive you with lies, remember that Jesus didn't bring you this far to leave you now! Stay in the Word, rely on the Holy Spirit's work in your life, and speak the Name of Jesus over everything you do! God Bless!
